The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant behavioural and commercial changes culminating in the migration of consumers to streaming services, mobile video and on-demand consumption, and a new wave of media mega-mergers that seek to create a super tier of content owners and streamers.

A group of experts hand-picked from the fields of AVOD/SVOD, Gaming, Distribution & MVPDs will discuss some of the most pressing issues and opportunities confronting the industry today. This will include one of the more fundamental dilemmas: are we now in a world where relevance and future success will be tied to greater scale and growth internationally?

The afternoon will end with a bang: Telenet CEO John Porter will be having a 121 Straight Talking session with renowned Business Journalist and Media Commentator, Kate Bulkley.

John Porter

CEO, Telenet

John Porter is a seasoned CEO with over 30 years of experience in the telecommunications, media and entertainment industry. Under his leadership as CEO of Telenet, the leading provider of telecom and entertainment services in Belgium, the company has substantially diversified its portfolio, built the largest Giga-network in Europe, led the way in fixed-mobile convergence and made bold moves in the entertainment space. He is currently also leading the company through a profound agile and digital transformation. He is passionate about advancing diversity, promoting servant leadership and leading with purpose.

Prior to joining Telenet, he was the CEO of AUSTAR, a leading entertainment company in Australia. He led the company from its inception until its acquisition by Foxtel. Before that, John also worked at Time Warner (Ohio), Group W, and Westinghouse Cable Systems (Texas & Alabama).

John is a global citizen with American-Australian dual nationality and has worked and lived on 3 continents. He enjoys riding his bike over the weekends and sharing music / book tips with his 4 children and wife over a beer.  

Alan Wolk

Christian Sponziello

Head of EUR Publishing Partnerships

Based out of London, Christian works for Riot Games, one of the worlds top games publishers as well as being the global leader in esports. Christian leads publishing partnerships for the European business, allowing him to work closely with teams across League of Legends and Valorant, plus ensuring a close alignment between publishing and esports partnerships.

Christian has vast experience in building marketing activations that drive relevance with an adjacent audience, whilst helping brand partners connect with relevance to their players. Prior to Riot, Christian had two stints at EA, prior to his role at Riot, he was the Global Director for partner collaborations, which saw his team working across a portfolio of AAA titles such as FIFA, The Sims and APEX Legends, whilst delivering global partner activations with globally renowned brands adidas, Red Bull, ASOS and many more.

Kauser Kanji

VOD Professional

Kauser Kanji has been working in online video for over 16 years – for companies like Virgin Media, ITN and NBC Universal – and has run VOD Professional, his specialist consultancy, since 2011. His clients include Netflix, the BBC, Channel 4 and A+E Networks as well as a range of national and international broadcasters from all over the world. Kanji also hosts a weekly online debate show called OTT Question Time where he quizzes industry luminaries about all aspects of the future of TV.

Louise Cottrell

Louise joined AMC Networks International UK’s (formerly Chello Zone) affiliate sales department in 2003 and is currently responsible for overseeing and managing channel sales and channel development for a large portfolio of AMCNI channel brands across Middle East, Africa, Poland, Israel and Turkey.
Prior to AMCNI, Louise spent seven years at Travel Channel as Head of Affiliate Sales and Marketing, joining the company at its launch in 1994. She also enjoyed a marketing career within The Economist’s Intelligence Unit.

Louise graduated from the University of London with a degree in Economics and Politics, and also achieved a CIM diploma in Marketing

Piers Harding-Rolls

Research Director, Games, Ampere Analysis

Piers has over 15 years of experience in analysing the games sector and has worked with and advised a large range of the top international games, media, telecoms, technology, consulting and financial services companies. At Ampere Analysis, Piers leads the company’s games research team, building next-generation games market and industry research products. He also leads games-related custom projects for a wide selection of blue chip organisations, including major media, technology and games publishing companies. Sam Wilson

VP Platform, Magnite

As VP, Platform EMEA at Magnite, Sam Wilson is responsible for driving commercial growth throughout the region. He has over 15 years of experience working across the digital advertising industry, specialising in connected TV (CTV), programmatic, and digital media sales.

His extensive career and ability to educate key market players on the benefits of digital advertising has resulted in unprecedented results for his clients, particularly within the new TV ecosystem.

Prior to Magnite, Sam held the position of VP Platform, EMEA at SpotX, before the business was acquired by Magnite in April 2021. He has previously worked at Brightcove, Kaltura and Limelight networks spearheading their growth in the European Market.

David Urgell

SVP Head of Streaming, ViacomCBS

David Urgell is Senior Vice President of Streaming for ViacomCBS Networks Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia (EMEAA).

In this role, he is responsible of developing the streaming strategy and launching and growing the new services across all the regions of the EMEA & Asia cluster, operating in the Emerging Business division dedicated to drive ViacomCBS Networks EMEAA digital business and capture new opportunities focused on the streaming sector, with AVOD and SVOD services including PlutoTV, Paramount+ and Noggin.

Prior to this role, Urgell served as Senior Vice President of OTT and previously SVP Strategy, Content Distribution and Digital for Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Southern and Western Europe, Middle East & Africa. In this role, he was responsible for developing new business and expanding the presence of VIMN brands including MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and Paramount in the regions, as well as overseeing the digital and content distribution of the entire content portfolio.

David is an experienced international executive, with responsibilities over strategy, business development, content distribution, digital implementation and product roll out. As part of his function, he manages the commercial relationships with major MVPDs and MNO´s, SVOD players, CTV and OEM manufacturers. He is also part of the management team of Pluto TV, in charge of the European roll out, and plays a central role in the strategy definition and launch of new D2C and B2B2C products such as Noggin and Paramount+.

Prior to joining ViacomCBS, David worked in Fox Networks Europe for 7 years, where he rose through the ranks to become the Vice President of Business Planning and Development for Europe and Africa. During his period at Fox Networks, the operation multiplied revenues by five and drastically improved the distribution of the Fox and National Geographic brands. He also served as a Senior Management consultant for 5 years at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in the Telco & Media practice, working with several European clients.

David is a global citizen: he was born in Spain, lived in Amsterdam and travels extensively across Europe, Middle East and Africa. He holds an Executive MBA from the ESADE Business and Law School. He also completed the ESIC: Business and Marketing School GESCO program and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He is a frequent keynote speaker and mentor.

Lukas Kernell

CTAM Europe Co-Chair & VP Content, Liberty Global

Lukas Kernell has been working with Liberty Global since 2003. As Vice President of Content, Lukas is responsible for maintaining LG’s relationships with its content partners. During his tenure with LG,

Lukas has also fulfilled various roles at Chello Media, LG’s former content and broadcast services division.
Prior to joining LG he has been employed by Stokvis-Niehe Producties, a subsidiary of Endemol, overseeing its initiatives in the new media space. At RTL, the largest commercial broadcaster in The Netherlands, Lukas was responsible for Business Development at iMedia, the “new media” unit of RTL. As General Counsel and VP Business Development at @Home Benelux, Lukas was instrumental in establishing and operating the joint venture between several Dutch cable operators, Intel and At Home Network.

With over 20 years’ experience in the television, internet and cable industry in various roles, Lukas continues to be fascinated by the ever developing worlds of media and technology. Lukas holds a law degree from the University of Maastricht and lives in Amsterdam with his wife Lynda and their son, Olivier.

Caz Lacey

Executive Search - Global Head of Video Games and Esports at Creative Artists Agency

Based in London, managing global mandates, Caz heads up CAA’s global gaming efforts. She has extensive experience working on senior executive and non-executive director positions for international gaming businesses. Her focus is on developing networks specifically within the esports and video gaming industries. Caz formerly led the video gaming practice at Odgers Berndtson’s for five years, working with major games publishers, developers, technology providers as well as esports tournament organisers and teams. Some of her clients included: Sony PlayStation, Electronic Arts DICE, ESL and Bethesda Europe. Prior to this she worked as a consultant for a boutique executive search firm in London specialising in entertainment and leisure.

Mirjam Laux

VP International, Platform Business, Roku

Mirjam oversees the platform monetization business for Roku Internationally. In her role as VP International Platform she is responsible for leading and expanding ad sales, entertainment distribution and The Roku Channel internationally. Prior to Roku, Mirjam held various executive roles at Amazon where she was responsible for the introduction of Video Channels in Germany/Austria, Prime Video Netherlands and managed the expansion of the self-publishing platform Prime Video Direct across Europe. Mirjam also held positions as Managing Director of FOX International Channels in Munich, as Head of Pay TV & Strategy at Germany’s largest broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 and as M&A Analyst for Morgan Stanley in the UK. Mirjam is currently based in Amsterdam and holds an MBA from The Wharton School.

Kate Bulkley

Media Commentator And Journalist

An award-winning business journalist and media commentator who appears on camera, on stage, online and in print. Kate moderates public and corporate events and writes regularly for specialist publications, including DTVE (formerly Cable & Satellite Europe) and Broadcast Magazine in the UK. She tweets @KateComments

Kate is the Awards Secretary for the Broadcasting Press Guild’s annual Television & Radio Awards and she is a member of the Royal Television Society's Early Evening Events Committee and is its past Chair. Kate served on IBC’s conference committee for over 10 years and was the consulting editor for the annual IBC Conference for 2016, 2017 and 2018 as well as an on-stage chair.

An American, Kate has lived and worked in London since 1990, first as International Editor for pay TV title Cable World magazine; then as Media Editor for European Business News, a 24-hour, pan-European channel, owned by Dow Jones & Co., where she created and co-presented the award-winning, daily half-hour media show called Media Report. From 1998 to 2001, Kate was on-screen Media and Telecommunications Editor at CNBC Europe, a co-venture between NBC and Dow Jones & Co. Kate began her journalism career at CNN in Washington, DC and subsequently worked in radio and in print in Colorado where she was senior reporter at The Denver Business Journal.

Kate has a master's degree in international economics and politics from the Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (part of Johns Hopkins University in Maryland), and an undergraduate degree in Modern European Studies from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts

Heather Dower

Founder and CEO, Hotdrop

Heather Dower is the Founder and CEO of the creative marketing agency, Hotdrop. Who specialize in engaging digital demographics across multiple mediums across gaming, esports and lifestyle. Heather became MCV's 30 under 30 in 2021 following the huge success with the growth and clientele Hotdrop have garnered within their first years.

Competitive at heart, Heather has always pushed herself to excel & grow within the industry leading her to set up Hotdrop in late 2019. Starting her journey in gaming as a streamer in early 2011, Heather quickly learned how to optimise a personal brand and developed expertise in the emerging market of esports & gaming influencers by becoming a successful brand influencer and esports broadcaster.

She cemented her broadcasting skills by becoming the Producer and Host of the world's first daily esports news show ‘The Daily Download’ broadcasting live in 55 countries.

Joining ESL UK in 2018, Heather applied her industry experience in her role as the UK’s Marketing Director. She led the marketing and creative teams through various leading global properties, brand activations, charitable events as well as pioneering new IP product development.
